Indochina is a peninsula in Southeast Asia , bordering India to the west and East Sea to the east.Strict sense, the Indochinese peninsula, including the three Indochinese countries once colonized by France :
Cambodia
Laos
Vietnam .
Broadly, with the name of Indian peninsula , the Indochinese peninsula, including the top three countries with:Peninsular Malaysia (the southern part of the Malay Peninsula , excluding the Malay archipelago ),Myanmar (or Burma old) and part of British India before 1947 ), andThailand (country Siam before).
Names
This area was originally called French Indo-Chine ( India – China ) to designate the area located east of India and southern China, the cultural influence of these two regions. The Vietnamese called Indochina to distinguish Atlantic (Europe) and Sub-Atlantic (peninsular region of India). Sometimes also called the Sino-Indian Peninsula or Indo-American peninsula follow the meaning of Indochine . The Chinese translation sound Indo-Chine into the Indian Na-Chi . The U.S. in Southeast Asia, Taiwan is known as the Central South Peninsula .In the Indochinese peninsula existed French Indochina , was the colony ‘s former France , consists of Annam ( central ), Cochinchine ( Southern ), Tonkin ( North Vietnam ) (all three now in Vietnam ), Laos and Cambodia. Sometimes people also use the Indo British to refer to the former British colonies in Indochina, Myanmar News at the time. Broad sense, the Indochinese can be called continental Southeast Asia ( Mainland Southeast Asia ).
History of the name
17-18 century, when it comes to areas of Southeast Asia , the French used the name of Foreign Publications (Inde exterieure) or across the river Ganges in India (Inde au-dela du Gange), while the British are called Ultra India-Ganges .The name Indo (Indo-Chine) first appeared under the pen of Malte Conrad Bruun (1775-1826) in the book Geography of mathematics, physical and political aspects of the world , published in 1804 . In episode 12 of this book refers to the Indo-Chine or kingdom Tonquin, Cochinchine, Laos …Four years later, Indo-Chine name appeared in an article by John Leyden (1775-1811) the Journal of Asian Studies of the Asia region of Bengal , published in Calcutta in 1808.
Religion
Religion in the region is the original Buddhism . Mahayana Buddhism is very popular in Vietnam, while Malaysia has a Muslim is the main religion, there exists many other religions.
